U.S. unemployment reaches 30-year low

WASHINGTON - America's record-breaking economy surged into thenew year with employers adding 387,000 jobs, pushing theunemployment rate down to a 30-year low of 4 percent.

January's rate was down from a 4.1 percent rate in December andthe lowest level since a 3.9 percent rate in January 1970. TheJanuary improvement reflected strong job growth in the servicesector, construction and in business services. Even employment atfactories, which have been shedding jobs, increased.

The economy entered 107 months of uninterrupted economic growthon Tuesday, the longest expansion in U.S. history, beating the oldmark of 106 months set during the 1960s.
