Vic: State cinemas open for Christmas

Victorian attorney general ROB HULLS says cinemas will be allowed to open on Christmas
Day, ending long standing government restrictions.

Under the state's 1958 Theatres Act, cinemas wanting to open on Christmas Day and Good
Friday have to seek permission from the Department of Justice.

Mr HULLS says until now, permits were not issued but ending the era of cinematic prohibition
simply recognises that laws such as these are less appropriate in a modern and multicultural
society such as Victoria.

The government has decided to allow cinemas to open this Christmas following a review
of the Theatres Act by the parliament's bipartisan Law Reform Committee.
